Lowering Springs: The Affordable Starting Point

Lowering springs replace your stock springs with shorter, stiffer units. They work with your existing struts and shocks, making them the most cost-effective way to lower your car.

Pros:

• Lower upfront cost — typically $150–$350 for a quality set
• Bolt-on installation using your existing struts
• Modest ride quality improvement over stock
• Good choice for a daily driver that just needs a cleaner stance

Cons:

• Fixed drop height — you get what you get
• Can cause premature strut wear if your OEM shocks aren't valved for the new spring rate
• Limited handling improvement compared to a full coilover setup
• No adjustability for track or autocross use

Coilovers: The Performance Choice

Coilovers replace your entire strut assembly — spring, shock, and mount — with a single integrated unit. The defining feature is adjustability: you can dial in your ride height, and on most performance coilovers, your damping as well.

Pros:

• Full ride height adjustability — set it exactly where you want it
• Damping adjustment (on most models) for street, sport, or track settings
• Significantly better handling and body control
• Matched spring and damper rates for optimal performance
• Long service life when properly maintained

Cons:

• Higher cost — quality coilovers range from $800 to $3,000+
• More involved installation
• Stiffer ride on budget options if damping isn't adjustable

Which Should You Choose?

Here's a simple decision framework:

• Daily driver, budget under $400, just want a lower stance: Lowering springs are the right call. Pair them with quality shocks for best results.
• Daily driver who also autocrosses or tracks occasionally: Entry-level adjustable coilovers (KW V1, Neuspeed) give you the flexibility to tune for both uses.
• Dedicated performance street or track car: Mid-to-high-end coilovers with damping adjustment (KW V3, 034 Dynamic+ Street) are worth every penny.
• Show car or stance build: Coilovers with wide adjustment range let you get the exact drop you want without sacrificing drivability entirely.

A Note on Alignment

Regardless of which route you go, plan for a four-wheel alignment after installation. Lowering your car changes your camber and toe settings, and driving on an out-of-spec alignment will wear your tires unevenly and affect handling. This is not optional — budget for it.
