OVERVIEW

Genuine VW/Audi rear crankshaft seal with flange, part number 06K-103-171-H. Also called the rear main seal, this assembly seals the assigned rear crankshaft opening in the original engine arrangement. The seal is carried in the pictured mounting flange.

Technical details

  • Original part number: 06K-103-171-H / 06K103171H.
  • Rear crankshaft sealing-flange assembly.
  • Pictured central crankshaft seal and surrounding flange mounting holes.
  • Confirmed applications below: specified TSI gasoline engine arrangements.
  • One sealing-flange assembly supplied. Mounting bolts, crankshaft, flywheel and other service parts are separate.

The rear crankshaft seal controls oil escape at the designated rotating crankshaft interface, while the flange provides the original mounting connection to the engine. Correct seating at both the crankshaft and flange contact surface is necessary for the assembly to seal as designed.

Seal revisions and installation requirements can differ. Match the original number, engine and actual flange arrangement before ordering rather than selecting the part solely from the vehicle's badge or a similar-looking housing.

Common reasons to replace

Replacement may be appropriate when diagnosis confirms an oil leak at the rear crankshaft seal or flange joint. A cut, damaged or incorrectly installed seal can also require renewal after the connection is inspected.

Transmission or clutch removal can expose the rear seal area for inspection. Follow the factory procedure when deciding whether to renew the seal during that work. Access to the assembly does not by itself establish that the seal is leaking.

Oil visible near the engine-to-transmission joint can come from other locations. Inspect the surrounding engine, sealing joints and oil paths before diagnosing the rear main seal. Correct any underlying crankcase ventilation or pressure problem identified by the factory diagnostic procedure.

A new seal cannot repair a damaged crankshaft sealing surface, cracked engine mounting area or a fault elsewhere in the lubrication system. Resolve the diagnosed cause and inspect the relevant contact surfaces before installation.

Installation and service notes

Follow the factory procedure for the exact engine and seal revision. This connection can require specific installation tools and a prescribed assembly sequence. Prepare access to the rear crankshaft and support removed drivetrain components as directed by the repair instructions.

Inspect the crankshaft sealing surface and flange mounting area for damage. Remove old sealing material and debris using the permitted method, without scoring the contact surfaces or introducing contamination into the engine.

Follow the seal-specific preparation requirements. Some rear crankshaft seals require dry installation or a defined waiting period; others have different instructions. Do not add oil, grease or sealant to the sealing lip unless the applicable procedure expressly requires it.

Install the flange and sealing lip with the prescribed guide and positioning method. Do not force the lip over an edge, remove an installation aid prematurely or use the mounting bolts to pull a misaligned assembly into place.

Use the specified flange sealing arrangement, fastener sequence and tightening requirements. Renew additional hardware wherever required by the procedure. The correct mounting bolts and any other necessary service materials are separate from this listing.

After reassembly, complete the required engine oil and leakage checks. Inspect the repaired area under the conditions specified by the factory procedure and diagnose any remaining leak rather than assuming a new seal resolves every source of oil at the transmission joint.
