Retain the original coolant hose quick connection
1J0-121-142 is the Genuine VW/Audi retaining spring for the specified coolant hose couplings and adapters. The formed metal clip engages the connector's retaining groove to keep the joined components mechanically secured.
The retaining clip and sealing O-ring perform different jobs. The clip holds the connection together while the correct separate seal contains coolant. Both must be suitable for the connector and installed correctly.

One clip is supplied. Hose, coupling body, adapter, sensor and sealing rings are separate. This clip is not the smaller coolant-temperature-sensor retaining clip. Compare the original connection and complete factory number.
Common reasons to replace
- The clip is missing after hose or adapter service.
- The spring is bent or no longer engages the connector groove.
- The clip is corroded or damaged.
- The repair procedure calls for replacement of the disturbed retainer.
Inspect the coupling's retaining groove, pipe end and seal. A cracked connector or damaged sealing surface requires a separate repair. Do not use a new clip to hold together an incompatible or incompletely seated connection.

Installation guidance
Allow the cooling system to cool fully and follow the prescribed depressurization and draining procedure. Inspect or renew the specified O-ring, fully seat the connector and engage the clip in the correct groove. Do not force the clip across a misaligned connection.
Perform the prescribed retention check, refill and bleed the cooling circuit using the vehicle-specific procedure, then check the serviced connection for leaks through normal operating temperature.
