OVERVIEW
Keep the original fuel-cap retaining strap attached
1J0-201-250 is the Genuine VW/Audi clip for the specified fuel-cap tether attachment. It secures the original retaining strap at its assigned mounting point so the cap remains connected when removed for refueling.
A missing or damaged tether attachment can leave the cap loose during refueling. The correct clip restores the original mechanical connection, but it does not perform the pressure-sealing function of the fuel cap itself.
Technical details
- Complete factory number: 1J0-201-250.
- Factory specification: individual factory fuel-cap retaining-strap clip.
- Design: black molded push-in retainer with the original strap attachment profile.
- Quantity supplied: one individual tether retaining clip.
One clip is supplied. Fuel cap, cap seal, tether strap, filler flap and filler-neck assembly are separate. This part is not a quick-connect fuel-line fitting.
Common reasons to replace
- The retaining clip is missing after cap or filler-area service.
- The clip's engagement feature has broken.
- The clip is distorted and no longer holds the original strap.
- The original attachment is damaged during removal.
Inspect the strap, cap and mounting hole before replacing the clip. A torn tether or damaged mounting point may need a separate repair. Diagnose an EVAP leak independently; a tether clip does not seal the fuel system.
Vehicle fitment

Installation guidance
Follow the vehicle-specific cap or filler-trim procedure. Remove the damaged clip without damaging the strap or paint, align the new retainer and seat it fully in the original mounting point. Keep debris out of the filler area.
Open and close the fuel cap and flap to confirm that the strap moves freely without being trapped. Check that the retaining clip stays securely engaged.
