OVERVIEW
Restore the battery ground connection
Genuine VW/Audi 5C0-971-235-B connects the negative battery terminal to the assigned vehicle ground point. A sound connection provides the return path needed by the starting, charging and electrical systems.
The cable assembly includes the battery terminal clamp, insulated conductor and ground attachment terminal shown in the archive photo. Match the original routing and connections, especially where battery monitoring equipment or Start/Stop changes the cable arrangement.
Technical details
- Complete factory number: 5C0-971-235-B.
- Factory specification: conventional negative battery cable, factory number 5C0-971-235-B.
- Design: insulated cable assembly with a battery post clamp and mounting-eye ground terminal.
- Quantity supplied: one individual negative battery cable assembly; battery, ground fastener and other cables are separate.
This cable is assigned to the conventional battery installation without Start/Stop. It is separate from the positive cable and from any additional engine-to-body ground strap. Do not substitute it for a different cable arrangement solely because the terminals appear similar.
Common reasons to replace
- Corrosion has damaged the terminal, conductor or ground connection.
- The cable insulation, crimp or mounting terminal is physically damaged.
- Voltage-drop testing identifies excessive resistance in the cable assembly.
Check the battery condition, terminal contact and body ground surface before replacing the cable. Slow cranking or charging faults can have several causes; a measured circuit test helps distinguish a cable problem from a battery, starter or alternator fault.
Vehicle fitment
Match the conventional battery configuration and exclusions in the table below. Check the complete factory number and cable routing.
| Vehicle | Model years | Engine | Configuration | Application restrictions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Passat | 2012–2014 | 2.5L gasoline | Sedan | Conventional negative battery cable; without Start/Stop; match original cable and connections. |
| Volkswagen Passat | 2012–2015 | 2.0L TDI | Sedan | Conventional negative battery cable; without Start/Stop; match original cable and connections. |
| Volkswagen Passat | 2014–2017 | 1.8L turbo gasoline | Sedan | Conventional negative battery cable; without Start/Stop; match original cable and connections. |
| Volkswagen Passat | 2018–2022 | 2.0L turbo gasoline | Sedan | Conventional negative battery cable; without Start/Stop; match original cable and connections. |
| Volkswagen Jetta | 2015 | 1.8L turbo / 2.0L gasoline / 2.0L turbo gasoline / 2.0L TDI | Sedan, without Hybrid | Conventional battery negative cable; without Start/Stop; confirm original cable routing. |
| Volkswagen Beetle | 2012–2013 | 2.5L gasoline | Coupe / Convertible where equipped | Matching conventional negative battery cable; without Start/Stop. |
Installation guidance
Follow the factory battery disconnection and reconnection procedure, including any required waiting period. Install the cable without twist or tension, prepare the ground contact as specified and tighten the terminal and ground fastener to the correct values.
Check secure terminal engagement and perform the prescribed electrical and voltage-drop checks. Complete any vehicle initialization required after the battery has been disconnected.
