OVERVIEW

Genuine VW/Audi Black 14-Pin Steering Column Connector Housing

5Q0-972-726 is the genuine black 14-pin contact housing used at a matching factory steering-column electrical connection. Its molded cavities locate the terminals, and the locking features help retain the contacts and keep the plug seated in the assigned connector.

This listing supplies one individual connector housing, as shown in the archive photo. It is a component for repairing the original connector body; it is not a steering-column control module, clock spring, complete wiring harness or heated steering wheel.

Technical details

  • Complete factory number: 5Q0-972-726.
  • Factory specification: 14-pin black contact housing with contact-locking mechanism; complete OEM number 5Q0972726.
  • Design: Molded terminal cavities and keyed connector body; red locking insert visible in the product photo.
  • Quantity supplied: one individual connector housing.

Pin count alone does not establish interchangeability. Connector keying, terminal arrangement and the factory number must agree with the original wiring. The similarly numbered brown 5Q0972726A housing is a distinct version. Terminals, repair wires and a mating connector are not assumed included.

Common reasons to replace

  • Broken connector latch that prevents the plug from staying seated.
  • Cracked housing or damaged terminal cavities found during a wiring repair.
  • Damaged contact-locking features that no longer retain properly installed terminals.
  • Heat damage or corrosion requiring a confirmed connector-body and terminal repair.

Inspect the terminals, mating connector and wiring before replacing the plastic housing. Loose contacts, corrosion, damaged insulation or overheated conductors require their own repair. Intermittent steering-wheel functions can have other causes, so diagnose the circuit rather than treating a housing as an electronic module.

Vehicle fitment

The table identifies the confirmed model family and the required original connector arrangement. Match the molded part number and equipment by VIN before transferring contacts; the vehicle name alone does not identify every steering-column connector.

Vehicle Model years Engine Configuration Application restrictions
Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport 2020–2023 2.0L turbo gasoline or 3.6L gasoline VR6 CM; original steering-column electronics; factory heated steering wheel Matching black 14-pin steering-column connector assigned 5Q0972726 only. Compare original molded number, keying and locking mechanism; verify factory heated-wheel equipment. Does not add steering-wheel heating to an unequipped vehicle. Brown 5Q0972726A is a different housing.

Installation guidance

Follow the factory battery-disconnection, steering-column access and restraint-system precautions for the vehicle. Record the original connector orientation and every wire-to-cavity position before releasing any terminals. Use the correct terminal-release tool so the contacts and locking features are not damaged.

Transfer only serviceable, correctly specified terminals according to the wiring diagram. Replace damaged contacts and repair wires as required, engage the locking mechanism and confirm that the connector latches fully. Restore harness routing without tension or chafing, then check the repaired functions using the applicable diagnostic procedure.

Ordering information

One individual housing is supplied. Verify 5Q0-972-726, black color, 14-pin layout and original connector keying before ordering. This housing repairs an existing compatible connection; it is not a retrofit kit or a universal substitute for other column wiring.
