OVERVIEW
Genuine VW/Audi Convertible Roof Hydraulic Cylinder Retaining Clip
8N7-871-799 is the genuine mechanical retaining clip used at assigned convertible-roof hydraulic cylinder attachments. Its curved retaining profile secures the specified connection so the roof cylinder remains correctly attached during normal roof movement. It is a service component of the factory roof mechanism, and its application depends on the installed cylinder attachment and roof equipment.
One individual clip is supplied per purchased unit. The original archive photograph shows two clips; it does not indicate a two-piece kit. Order the number required for the specific repair. The cylinder, mounting joint, pump and associated roof hardware are separate components.
Technical details
- OEM number: 8N7-871-799 / 8N7871799.
- Function: Retaining clip for the assigned roof hydraulic-cylinder attachment.
- Catalog designation: Securing bar / hydraulic cylinder clip.
- Eos nominal application size: 13 mm, as identified in the factory component assignment.
- Quantity: One clip per purchased unit.
The nominal 13 mm designation identifies the Eos attachment application; it is not a shipping measurement or a complete set of physical dimensions. The Eos roof mechanism also uses a separate 16 mm clip, 1Q0-871-799-A, at other cylinder positions. These assignments must be checked individually. Other roof or hydraulic-line retaining clips are separate parts.
Common reasons to replace
Replace the clip if it is missing, bent, cracked, corroded, damaged during removal or unable to engage its intended retaining location securely. Replacement may also be necessary during cylinder or attachment service when the original clip cannot be reused under the factory repair procedure.
Inspect the mating joint and cylinder attachment for wear or damage before installing a new clip. A loose or damaged connection requires correction of the affected components. The clip does not repair a leaking cylinder, defective pump, failed roof sensor, damaged linkage or misaligned roof mechanism.
Fitment
Match the factory roof equipment and the specific cylinder attachment shown in the table. Similar-looking roof hardware can use different retaining clips.
| Vehicle | Model years | Engine | Configuration | Application restrictions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Beetle Convertible | 2003–2010 | Body hardware; match the original powered-roof cylinder attachment | Factory power convertible top; PR 3FT; Roof attachment; no transmission-specific restriction listed | Hydraulic roof cylinder retaining clip at the assigned factory attachment. Convertible only; not a Coupe or a manual-top application. One clip supplied. |
| Audi TT Roadster | 2003–2006 | Body hardware; match the original powered-roof cylinder attachment | Type 8N Roadster; powered canvas convertible top; PR 3FN; Roof attachment; no transmission-specific restriction listed | Original hydraulic cylinder retaining clip assignment only. Not a Coupe, manual canvas roof or later 8J/8S roof. One clip supplied. |
| Volkswagen Eos | 2007–2015 | Body hardware; match the original powered-roof cylinder attachment | 1F retractable hardtop; original 13 mm hydraulic-cylinder clip positions; Roof attachment; no transmission-specific restriction listed | Only roof-cylinder attachment positions assigned 8N7871799, nominal 13 mm. Other positions use 1Q0871799A, nominal 16 mm, or separate clips. One clip supplied. |
Installation and service guidance
Follow the factory convertible-roof repair procedure and place the roof in the prescribed service position before working at the cylinder attachment. Support the roof and connected components as required so the joint is not loaded while the retainer is removed or installed.
Inspect the attachment, retaining groove and original clip assignment. Fit the correct clip fully into its specified location without distorting the retaining profile. Do not substitute an unrelated hydraulic-line clip or a different cylinder clip based on appearance alone.
After assembly, verify secure engagement and restore the roof mechanism according to the specified service sequence. Check roof movement, attachment security and clearance through the prescribed functional test. Any separate cylinder, joint, linkage or control-system fault requires its own diagnosis and repair.
