OVERVIEW
Factory compression ring for the assigned EGR pipe union
N-020-823-1 is the Genuine VW/Audi compression ring, also cataloged as a die ring, used in the specified exhaust-gas-recirculation pipe connection. Its shaped profile works with the matching union nut and receiving fitting.
The ring is part of the complete pipe union sealing arrangement. Replacing it during the appropriate repair restores the specified sealing component, but the pipe end and mating receiver must also be sound for the joint to seal correctly.
Technical details
- Complete factory number: N-020-823-1.
- Factory specification: Factory die-ring designation 12.
- Design: formed compression ring for the matching EGR pipe union.
- Quantity supplied: one individual compression ring.
The catalog designation must be matched to the complete factory number and original pipe fitting. This is not a flat flange gasket or an elastomer O-ring, and it should not be substituted solely by appearance.
Common reasons to replace
- The original ring is damaged or deformed.
- Leakage has been traced to the assigned EGR pipe union.
- The pipe connection has been opened and the procedure requires a new ring.
- The original ring is missing after disassembly.
- A previous repair used an incorrect sealing component.
Inspect the pipe end, union nut and receiving fitting for cracks, scoring and distortion. A new ring cannot correct a damaged pipe or receiver. Diagnose the source of an emissions-system fault before replacing components.

Installation guidance
Work on the cooled system and follow the factory EGR pipe procedure. Prepare and inspect the mating components, position the new ring correctly and start the union nut by hand to avoid cross-threading.
Tighten to the prescribed specification without forcing a misaligned pipe. Inspect the repaired connection for leakage and complete the required system checks before returning the vehicle to service.
Ordering information
Supplied individually as one genuine compression ring. EGR valve, connecting pipe, union nut and other seals are separate. Confirm the original union position and quantity required.
