OVERVIEW
Genuine VW/Audi Valve Cover Stud
N-101-863-01 is the genuine threaded stud used to retain the valve cover on the matched Volkswagen eight-valve engines below. Its lower threaded end anchors in the cylinder head, while the upper threaded end accepts the original cover retaining hardware. This listing supplies one individual stud. The confirmed cover applications require eight studs for a complete set; nuts, washers, the valve cover and gasket are separate.
Technical details
- OEM number: N-101-863-01 / N10186301.
- Part type: Double-ended valve-cover fastening stud with the original intermediate unthreaded section.
- Factory catalog designation: M6 × 20. Match the complete original stud rather than treating the catalog designation as a generic bolt specification.
- Application: Matched G60 / PG and ABA eight-valve valve-cover assemblies.
- Quantity: One stud supplied; eight required for a full matched cover.
- Compatibility control: Engine code, cover design, gasket arrangement and original stud assignment.
The stud supports the original nut-and-cover arrangement so the gasket can be clamped as the repair procedure specifies. Correct thread engagement and the proper cover hardware matter: using an unrelated bolt or an incorrect stud can change how the cover seats or damage the receiving threads. The stud itself does not seal an oil leak; sealing depends on the gasket, cover condition and correct assembly.
Common reasons to replace
Replacement is appropriate when the original stud has stripped threads, is bent, fractured or missing, or has been damaged while removing the cover. Renew incorrect hardware discovered during previous service and replace studs that cannot securely retain the specified nut. A stud that backs out with the nut should be inspected rather than immediately reused without checking its threads and mounting hole.
Oil seepage around a valve cover can also result from a hardened gasket, distorted cover, cracked mounting area, unsuitable gasket hardware or excessive crankcase pressure. Inspect these conditions before assuming a new stud will resolve the leak. A stripped cylinder-head hole requires a proper thread repair; tightening a replacement stud harder will not restore a damaged hole.
Fitment
Use the table together with the installed engine code and original fastening arrangement. Cover and gasket designs can change during previous repairs, so confirm that the stud corresponds to the hardware actually specified for the assembly. These entries do not include every engine available in each vehicle.

Installation and service guidance
Follow the factory procedure with the engine cooled. Keep dirt and metal debris out of the exposed cylinder head. Remove a damaged stud using the appropriate stud-removal method, inspect the receiving threads, and install the replacement with the specified engagement and installation method. Do not substitute a generic torque value for the cylinder-head attachment.
Fit the correct gasket and cover hardware, then tighten the cover nuts in the prescribed sequence and to the specified torque for that engine. Excessive tightening can distort the cover, crush the gasket or damage the stud threads. Confirm that the cover seats evenly, reconnect any removed ventilation hoses and inspect for oil seepage after the engine has run. If an earlier gasket arrangement uses different shouldered hardware, confirm the complete factory conversion requirements rather than mixing incompatible studs and gasket components.
