OVERVIEW

Genuine VW/Audi internal six-lobe bolt, part number N-101-961-03. This original fastener retains the specified component at its engine mounting position. The selected applications below include the FSI camshaft-position sensor and TSI thermostat housing-to-water-pump attachment. Use the part number and exact mounting location to select the correct hardware.

Technical details

  • Original part number: N-101-961-03 / N10196103.
  • Published nominal size: M6 x 18 mm.
  • Internal six-lobe drive and rounded bearing head, supplied individually as pictured.
  • Cataloged replacement for earlier hardware reference N0147035 where the original parts catalog specifies the supersession.
  • One bolt is supplied. Sensors, thermostats, pumps, seals and companion fasteners are separate components.
  • This bolt has multiple mounting applications. An M6 thread does not establish that it replaces every M6 screw on the vehicle.
  • Confirm the engine code and assembly position. FSI and TSI mounting applications in the same model family can differ.

Common reasons to replace

Replacement is appropriate when the drive recess is rounded, the threads are damaged, the head no longer seats correctly or the original hardware is missing after service. Corrosion or damage that prevents smooth engagement also requires evaluation before reuse.

Inspect the component and mating threads as well as the bolt. For a sensor attachment, check that the sensor seats correctly and its mounting tab is intact. For a thermostat housing, inspect the housing, contact surfaces and specified seal. New hardware does not repair a cracked housing, damaged mounting ear or failed coolant seal.

Diagnose the underlying symptom before replacing parts. A sensor fault can involve the electrical connection, wiring or engine control system. A coolant leak can originate from a seal, pipe or pump. Additional tightening is not a repair for a damaged component and can damage the mating threads.

Installation and service notes

Follow the factory procedure for the exact attachment. Use a correctly fitting drive bit, clean the mating threads as directed and start the bolt by hand. Confirm the mounted component is fully seated before final tightening.

Use the tightening specification and thread preparation required for that assembly. Do not estimate torque from the M6 size or transfer a specification between a sensor attachment and a thermostat housing. Replace companion hardware and seals when the repair procedure requires it.

For cooling-system work, let the engine cool before opening the circuit, then refill and bleed it according to the vehicle procedure. Check the completed repair for leaks. For sensor work, ensure the connector is locked and the wiring is routed correctly, then verify the repair through the appropriate diagnostic checks.
