OVERVIEW
Genuine VW/Audi internal six-lobe bolt, part number N-101-963-03. This original M6 fastener is used at specified engine attachment positions. The confirmed applications below cover selected timing components on the BPY FSI engine, with the mounting location identified for each profile.
Technical details
- Original part number: N-101-963-03 / N10196303.
- Published nominal size: M6 x 22 mm.
- Internal six-lobe drive; use a correctly fitting tool.
- Supersedes the cataloged earlier number N10196302.
- Sold individually. Timing cover, tensioner, chain, seals and other hardware are separate.
- Applications must match the engine and component location; this is not a universal replacement for every M6 engine bolt.
Common reasons to replace
Replace the bolt if its drive recess is rounded, its threads are damaged, its head is deformed or the original fastener is missing. During timing-system work, inspect removed hardware and renew any fastener that the factory repair procedure requires replacing.
A damaged drive can prevent controlled removal and tightening, while damaged threads can keep the component from seating correctly. Check the receiving threads and mounting surfaces before installing replacement hardware. A new bolt cannot correct a cracked cover, damaged tensioner mounting point or defective threaded hole.
Timing noise, an engine warning light or a camshaft correlation fault requires diagnosis of the complete system. This fastener is a service component, not a repair for chain wear, incorrect timing or a malfunctioning tensioner by itself.
Installation and service notes
Identify the engine code before ordering and confirm the bolt's exact position in the factory parts diagram. These listed profiles apply to the belt-driven BPY FSI engine. Do not substitute this fitment for a later TSI engine based solely on a 2.0L displacement or the A3 model name.
If the repair requires opening or disturbing the timing mechanism, follow the factory procedure and use the required timing tools. Keep the bolt locations organized: different parts of the timing assembly can use similar-looking fasteners with different lengths and specifications.
Inspect mating threads, seat the component correctly and start the bolt by hand. Use the specified tightening sequence and torque for that exact location. Do not derive a torque from the M6 diameter or reuse a value intended for another cover or engine.
Use thread treatment only as directed by the applicable repair instructions. After timing work, complete the prescribed timing verification and checks before returning the vehicle to service. For a cover-only repair, verify that the cover is seated and clear of moving components.
