OVERVIEW
Genuine mechanical speedometer-drive retaining ring
The N-900-154-01 Genuine VW/Audi securing ring retains the assigned drive component in the original mechanical speedometer-drive assembly on the applications listed below.
This small ring belongs to the drive-wheel and shaft arrangement, rather than the instrument-panel housing. The original assembly also uses a separate O-ring and mounting hardware. Identify the exact ring and original groove before ordering.
Technical details
- Complete factory number: N-900-154-01.
- Factory specification: nominal catalog size 8.
- Design: open securing ring for the original speedometer-drive retention groove.
- Quantity supplied: one individual ring.
The catalog size identifies the ring itself rather than packaged shipping dimensions. Groove geometry and the original drive component determine the correct selection. A similar-looking ring from another engine or transmission assembly is not automatically interchangeable.
Common reasons to replace
- The securing ring is missing after drive or cable service.
- The ring has become distorted during removal.
- The ring no longer seats securely in its correct groove.
- The ring edges are damaged.
- Incorrect substitute retaining hardware was installed previously.
Inspect the drive gear, shaft, retention groove and cable connection. A new ring cannot repair a damaged gear or worn groove. An inoperative or erratic speedometer may also involve the cable or instrument, so identify the fault before replacing retaining hardware.
Vehicle fitment

Installation guidance
Follow the factory mechanical speedometer-drive service procedure. Keep the drive components and retention groove clean, preserve the prescribed component order and use suitable retaining-ring tools without distorting the ring or damaging the shaft.
Confirm the ring is fully seated and the drive component is retained correctly. Restore the separate seal and cable attachment as prescribed, then complete the required leak and speedometer operation checks for the repair.
