OVERVIEW

Genuine VW/Audi tie rod pinch bolt self-locking nut, part number N-908-923-02. This original M10 hex nut is used with the pinch/lock bolt to retain the outer tie rod end at its assigned spindle attachment on the configurations below. It is supplied individually for steering service or replacement of damaged retaining hardware.

Technical details

  • Original number: N-908-923-02 / N90892302.
  • Published nominal thread size: M10.
  • External hex wrenching flats with a shoulder beneath the nut.
  • Specified application: outer tie rod end-to-steering-knuckle attachment.
  • One nut supplied. Tie rod end, steering knuckle and other steering hardware are separate.

The nut retains the tie rod end at the knuckle connection as part of the steering linkage. Correct hardware is necessary for the prescribed pinch-bolt attachment. It is distinct from the adjustment nut that connects the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod.

Match the original nut number and the actual mating pinch bolt before ordering. Aftermarket steering components can include different prescribed hardware. A matching nominal thread size alone does not establish suitability for every steering attachment.

Common reasons to replace

Inspect the nut when the tie rod end connection is released during steering, knuckle or related suspension service. Renew self-locking hardware wherever the factory or approved component procedure requires it.

Replace damaged threads, rounded wrenching flats, deformation, missing hardware or corrosion affecting reliable installation. Earlier repairs may leave an incorrect substitute or damaged fastener at the steering connection.

Inspect the mating pinch bolt, joint and knuckle connection alongside the nut. A new nut cannot repair a worn tie rod joint, bent bolt, damaged knuckle or stripped bolt threads. Correct the diagnosed component defect before completing the attachment.

Steering play, uneven tire wear, clunks or alignment changes require diagnosis of the complete steering and suspension system. Replacing this retaining nut alone does not restore a worn joint or correct an alignment setting.

Installation and service notes

Follow the factory procedure for the exact outer tie rod arrangement. Use the approved method to separate the joint without damaging the joint boot, bolt or knuckle. Identify the original retaining position before selecting replacement hardware.

Inspect the bolt threads and mating connection, then position the tie rod end correctly. Start the new nut by hand without cross-threading. Do not use the nut to force an incorrectly aligned or incompatible component into place.

Use the correct hex tool and the prescribed method to hold the mating bolt where required. Follow the factory tightening requirement for this exact attachment and observe the specified thread preparation.

Do not transfer a tightening value from the tie rod adjustment nut, a ball joint nut or an unrelated M10 fastener. Follow the hardware replacement instructions supplied with any approved replacement tie rod component.

If the connection does not seat normally, inspect the bolt, knuckle and hardware selection before continuing. Do not compensate for damaged threads or joint wear by applying additional tightening force.

Complete the required steering and suspension checks after assembly, including alignment assessment where the service procedure calls for it. Confirm that the joint boot and nearby components have their prescribed clearance through steering movement.

This listing supplies one original retaining nut; select the tie rod end and other steering service components separately.
