OVERVIEW
Genuine VW/Audi oil filter housing drain plug, part number WHT-000-897-A. This threaded plug closes the service opening in the matching oil filter housing or cover. Opening that drain allows retained oil to be collected before the housing is removed during filter service. Its sealing ring closes the joint between the plug and its mating seat.
Technical details
- Original part number: WHT-000-897-A / WHT000897A.
- Threaded filter-housing service plug with sealing ring, as shown in the product photo.
- Supplied as one plug and sealing ring. The filter element, housing and large housing seal are separate.
- Match the plug to the installed filter cover; different engines within the same model can use different assemblies.
Common reasons to replace
Replacement may be needed when the plug's threads are damaged, the plug has been lost during service or its sealing surfaces no longer allow a sound seal. A hardened, cut or displaced sealing ring can leave oil around the drain opening. Repeated removal makes inspection of the ring and thread engagement especially useful.
Oil near the filter housing can also come from the housing seal, a cracked cover or a nearby joint. Clean and inspect the area to identify the leak before choosing parts. Replacing the plug will not repair damaged threads in the housing or a cracked filter cover.
Installation and service notes
Allow the engine and oil to cool sufficiently for the specified service procedure. Position a suitable catch container before opening the filter housing drain and keep dirt out of the service opening. Inspect the housing threads and sealing seat, and replace damaged components before reassembly.
Fit the sealing ring in its correct location, following the vehicle's lubrication instructions. Start the plug by hand to avoid cross-threading and tighten to the factory specification for the installed housing. Excess tightening can damage the threads or cover. After completing oil service, verify the oil level and inspect the plug and housing for leakage.
Fitment
