OVERVIEW
Genuine VW/Audi coolant flange sealing O-ring, part number WHT-001-688. This circular seal closes the matching coolant flange or pipe connection on the applications listed below. It works by fitting into the joint's designated sealing seat and being compressed evenly when the mating components are correctly installed, helping contain coolant as the cooling system warms and pressurizes.

Common reasons to replace
Renew this seal when servicing its coolant connection, when the old ring is cut or flattened, or when diagnosis identifies seepage through the joint. A twisted or pinched O-ring may leak even if the flange itself is undamaged. Heat cycling, age and previous removal can make an old seal less able to conform to the sealing surfaces.
Coolant residue near a flange, gradual coolant loss or wetness around a connection warrants inspection. These symptoms do not identify the seal alone: a cracked plastic flange, loose retaining hardware, a damaged pipe, another leak above the joint or cooling-system overpressure can produce similar evidence. Replacing an O-ring does not repair a cracked housing or correct an overheating fault elsewhere in the system.
Installation and service notes
Allow the engine to cool and follow the vehicle-specific draining and pressure-release procedure before opening the cooling system. Clean the seal seat and inspect the mating flange or pipe for damage. Fit the replacement ring without stretching, twisting or trapping it outside its groove, and use only the assembly lubricant or coolant permitted by the repair manual.
Confirm correct engagement of the connector and its retaining hardware. Refill with the approved coolant specification, bleed the system as required and check for leakage after service. Match the VIN, engine code, installed flange and sealing position before ordering; several visually similar seals may be used on the same engine.
