OVERVIEW

Genuine VW/Audi engine cover ball stud

WHT-005-404 provides the ball-shaped attachment that engages the matching socket in the original engine appearance cover. Its threaded end anchors the stud at the specified mounting point while the ball end locates and retains the cover through the separate cover socket.

This is an individual mounting component, useful when a cover attachment is broken, worn or missing. Engine covers often use multiple ball studs of different heights and shapes. Replace the assigned stud rather than substituting a visually similar pin from another position.

Technical details and supplied quantity

  • Manufacturer part number: WHT-005-404; compact reference WHT005404.
  • Brand: Genuine VW/Audi.
  • Component: engine cover ball stud with a threaded mounting end.
  • Original catalog size designation: 10 × 41. Match the complete factory stud profile and original part number.
  • Quantity: one stud per purchase. The engine cover, cover sockets and other mounting studs are separate.

The size designation identifies the factory hardware profile; it should not be interpreted as the thread specification. The cover socket supplies the mating push-on engagement. A worn socket can allow movement even when the stud itself is intact.

Common reasons to replace

  • The ball end or body is broken during engine-cover removal or refitting.
  • The original stud is missing after access to components beneath the cover.
  • The ball surface is worn and no longer holds securely in a serviceable cover socket.
  • The threaded mounting end is damaged or incorrect replacement hardware has been fitted.

Inspect the cover sockets, mounting tabs and remaining studs when investigating a loose or rattling cover. Replacing one stud will not restore a damaged cover or a loose receiving mount. Use each specified stud at its original location to maintain the intended cover alignment.

Vehicle fitment

Use the engine, body and production restrictions below together with the original mounting position. Fitment applies only where the factory engine-cover arrangement assigns WHT005404. Changed covers, brackets or aftermarket intake layouts require separate mounting verification.

Installation and service guidance

Work with the engine cool and follow the factory engine-cover removal procedure. Release the cover at its designated attachment points without levering against wiring, hoses or adjacent engine components.

Inspect the receiving mount and start the correct stud by hand. Tighten at the prescribed tool engagement area using the factory specification for that attachment; avoid twisting or gripping the ball end. Refit any other required studs in their assigned positions.

Align the cover sockets with their matching ball studs before pressing the cover into place. Check that each mounting point engages and that the cover sits correctly without loading nearby wiring or hoses. Replace damaged sockets or cover tabs separately.
